MESS COMMITTEE

The Mess Committee consists of 24 elected members who are students residing in the hostel and members of the respective messes. The composition of the committee is as follows:

Vegetarian 'A' Mess : 4 members

Vegetarian 'B' Mess : 4 members

Vegetarian 'C' Mess : 4 members

Vegetarian 'D' Mess : 4 members

Vegetarian 'E' Mess : 4 members

Non-Vegetarian 'B' Mess : 2 members

Non-Vegetarian 'C' Mess : 2 members

  • The term of the elected Mess Committee is one year.
  • Each mess shall form a constituency for electing its representatives. All members who have cleared their Hostel and Mess dues up to the notified month are eligible to vote.
  • In composite messes ‘B’ and ‘C’, non-vegetarian members are eligible to vote for vegetarian representatives. Only non-vegetarian members may vote for non-vegetarian representatives.
  • The Chair, Council of Wardens (CoW) or nominee shall be ex-officio member(s). Elected members shall elect the President and Vice-President from among themselves.
  • A member elected or nominated for one term is not eligible for election or nomination in the next term.
  • Current Student Council members, Gymkhana Committee members and past Mess Committee members are not eligible to contest.
  • Day boarders who are not using mess facilities are not eligible to vote.
  • Residents with pending dues (tuition fee, hostel and mess dues) are not eligible to contest, propose or second a nomination.
  • Elections shall be held once a year during October / November.
  • Candidates must file nominations online as notified by the Election Committee.
  • Final-year students are not eligible to contest.
    (Definition of Final Year: UG Program: 4th year ongoing Masters Program: 2nd year ongoing Int PhD Program: 7th year ongoing Ph D Program: 5th year ongoing)
  • If nominations are less than or equal to vacancies, candidates shall be declared elected unopposed.
  • In case of a tie in votes, the decision shall be made by a toss of a coin.
  • Selection of Mess President and Vice-President shall be conducted by the Chair, CoW based on majority vote.
  • The Mess Committee shall meet at least once a month. The quorum for a meeting is 7 members.

ROLE OF MESS COMMITTEE

  • The Mess President shall report to the Chair, Council of Wardens.
  • The Mess Committee shall determine the menu in consultation with the Mess Supervisor and Head Cook. The Mess President shall ratify the menu.
  • The Mess Committee shall act as an advisory body on food quality, cleanliness and service standards.
  • A General Body Meeting shall be convened if requested by more than 150 resident members.
  • The quorum for a General Body Meeting shall be 150 members.
  • All changes to rules must be ratified by the Director before implementation.
  • Mess Supervisors shall ensure food preparation as per the approved menu and report deviations to the Chair, Council of Wardens.
